It depends on when the car was first registered. Cars from April 2017 pay a first-year rate based on CO₂ then a flat standard rate, plus a supplement if the list price was over £40,000. Cars from March 2001 to March 2017 are taxed by CO₂ band. Older cars are taxed by engine size.
Do electric cars pay road tax?
Yes. Since April 2025 electric cars pay vehicle tax, including the expensive car supplement where it applies.
Is road tax the same as car tax?
Yes. Road tax, car tax and vehicle excise duty (VED) all mean the same thing.
