What Is An HPI Check? Meaning, What It Covers And Whether You Need One

HPI stands for Hire Purchase Investigation. Here is what an HPI check actually covers, what it does not, and how it differs from a free MOT or DVLA lookup.
“HPI check” has become the everyday name for a used car history check in the UK, in the same way people say “hoover” for any vacuum cleaner. HPI is a company name, and the check began as a way to find cars sold while still under hire purchase finance.
What does HPI stand for?
HPI is usually explained as Hire Purchase Investigation. The original service existed to answer one question: does this car still belong to a finance company? Over time the checks grew to cover much more.
What does an HPI-style check cover?
A full vehicle history check normally looks for:
•
Outstanding finance, meaning an active agreement that gives the lender a claim on the car
•
Insurance write-off records, such as the Cat S and Cat N categories
•
Stolen markers, from police and insurer records
•
Mileage discrepancies, which can point to a clocked odometer
•
Plate changes and previous keepers
•
Identity checks, such as whether the VIN and engine number match official records
•
Import and export status
Some reports add MOT history and a valuation. The exact list depends on the provider and the level of report.
What a check does not tell you
•
Mechanical condition. A history check says nothing about the engine, gearbox, brakes or hidden accident damage that was never recorded.
•
Everything about mileage. Mileage is cross-checked against recorded readings, so a car with few readings is harder to judge.
•
Imported cars’ history before arrival. A UK check can only see UK records.

HPI vs a free check
Free tools from the government show tax and MOT status and MOT history. They do not show finance, write-off or stolen records, which come from commercial and industry databases. That is why free MOT history is a good first step but not a full history check. See the difference in MOT history vs a full vehicle check.
Do you need an “HPI” check specifically?
Not necessarily. HPI is one brand among several providers that use similar data sources. What matters is that the report you buy covers finance, write-offs, stolen status and mileage, and that you run it on the car’s registration yourself. If you want a comparison, read our guide to HPI check alternatives.
Some providers add a guarantee that compensates you in certain cases if the data was wrong. Guarantees have limits and exclusions, so read the terms before you rely on one.
When to run a check
Before you pay a deposit and again before handing over the full amount. A car’s record can change, so a report from a week ago may be out of date.

FAQ
Is an HPI check legally required? No. It is optional, but it is the best protection against buying a car with hidden finance or a write-off history.
How long does a check take? Most are instant once you enter the registration.
