How To Negotiate A Used Car Price In The UK: Practical Steps That Work

A step-by-step guide to haggling on a used car, from researching the real price to using faults and history as leverage, with different tactics for dealers and private sellers.
Almost every used car has some room on price, but haggling works best when you are prepared. Here is a practical approach for both dealer and private sales.
1. Know the real market price
Search for five or six similar cars with the same make, model, age, mileage and trim. Note the range. Your opening offer should sit in the lower part of that range, and your maximum should sit comfortably inside it.
2. Set your ceiling before you talk
Decide the most you will pay, and write it down. It is easy to drift upward in the moment, and a number you set in advance helps you walk away.
3. Check the car properly first
Facts are your leverage:
•
MOT history: repeated advisories, past failures and gaps. Check it free with our MOT check.
•
Mileage: does it rise evenly? See signs of a clocked car.
•
Service history: missing stamps are a reasonable reason to ask for less.
•
Tyres, brakes and wear items: price what they will cost to replace and use it in your offer.
4. Run the history check
A history report can protect you from a bad deal, and the findings can also move the price. Outstanding finance has to be cleared before a sale, and a write-off category usually means a lower value. See Cat S and Cat N explained.

5. Make the offer
•
Open lower than you expect to pay, with a reason, such as the work the car needs.
•
Be polite and calm. Aggressive haggling usually backfires.
•
Let the seller respond first, and be comfortable with silence.
•
Be ready to walk away. It is the strongest position you can have.
Dealer vs private seller
Dealer
Private seller
Room on price
Often some, and extras can help
Usually more, especially for a quick sale
What to ask for instead
A service, warranty, MOT or full tank
A lower price and a clean handover
Your protection
Stronger consumer rights
Fewer, so check the car yourself
If a dealer will not move on price, ask for extras such as a service, a warranty or a new MOT. For private sales, read buying from a private seller and watch for private seller scams.
Timing helps
Dealers are often more flexible at the end of a month or quarter and in quieter periods such as winter.
What not to do
•
Do not pay a deposit to lock in a price before you have seen the car. See car deposit scams.
•
Do not accept a price that is far too low to be true. See too good to be true prices.

FAQ
How much can I knock off a used car? It depends on the car, the seller and the market, so base your offer on comparable cars and the car’s faults, not a fixed percentage.
Is it rude to haggle? No. Sellers expect it, especially on used cars.
Should I negotiate before or after the test drive? After. You will know the real condition and can price any issues.
