A price far below the market is the most common bait in car scams. Here is how to benchmark a price, what a low price usually means, and what to check before you act.
Everyone loves a bargain, and scammers know it. A price well below the market is the bait that starts most car scams, because it creates excitement and a feeling of urgency.
This is general advice, not a claim that any low price is a scam.
Check this car free first: enter the registration at carverified.co.uk to confirm it matches the advert, then see what a full report adds on the pricing page.
What a very low price can mean
•
A scam: the car does not exist or is not the seller’s to sell.
•
Hidden history: finance, a write-off category, a clocked odometer or a past theft.
•
A cloned car: the plate belongs to a different vehicle.
•
A genuine problem: a fault or an accident the seller is not mentioning.
A genuine bargain exists, such as a motivated seller or a car that needs work. The difference is that a genuine seller lets you check it.
How to benchmark a price
1.
Search for five or six similar cars: the same make, model, age, mileage and trim.
2.
Look at the range, ignoring the very cheapest and the most expensive.
3.
If the car is far below the bottom of the range, ask why.
4.
If the answer involves a rush, a story or off-platform payment, walk away.

What to check before you act
•
Run the registration through a free check, and compare the details with the advert.
•
Check the MOT history for an even mileage trend.
•
Run a full report for finance, write-off and stolen markers.
•
Use the used car checklist at the viewing.
The rule
If you cannot explain why the car is cheap, assume there is a reason. Read the complete used car scams guide for the other common patterns.
Which CarVerified report covers this?
A very low price often hides finance or a bad history. Silver Plus adds the finance check, and Gold is the most complete report before you commit.
•
Free check: start with the free vehicle check to confirm the make, model, colour, year and MOT and tax status match the advert.
•
Silver: the core vehicle history check. Finance is not part of Silver, but it can be unlocked separately.
•
Silver Plus: adds the outstanding finance check.
•
Gold: the most complete report, adding ex-taxi, salvage and valuation checks.
See what each report includes on the pricing page or the sample report, and use the used car checklist when you view the car.
