What to check before buying a used Land Rover Defender, from the 2020-on model's engines and known issues to theft risk, insurance and the history checks that matter most.
The Land Rover Defender is one of the most desirable 4x4s on the UK market, and it tends to hold its value well. That makes it worth taking extra care: high values attract finance, theft and clocking, and repairs can be expensive.
Which Defender are you looking at?
•
Classic Defender (up to 2016): the original, utilitarian model. Values are high for good examples, and rust, rot and modifications are the main concerns.
•
New Defender (2020 onwards): a completely new, modern SUV. This guide focuses mainly on this generation.
The new Defender comes in three body lengths: the 90 (three-door), 110 (five-door, the most common) and 130 (longer, with up to eight seats).
Engines
•
Diesel (D200, D250, D300, and earlier D240): the most popular choice, and best for towing and long journeys. Most are mild hybrid.
•
Petrol (P300, P400): smoother but thirstier.
•
Plug-in hybrid (P400e): can do short trips on electricity if you can charge at home.
•
V8: a rare high-performance version.
Check the exact engine on the V5C matches the advert, as it affects tax, insurance and value.
Common issues to check
•
Software and electrics: early cars had infotainment and electrical glitches. Ask whether all software updates have been done by a Land Rover dealer.
•
Recalls: the Defender has had several recalls. Ask for proof they’ve been completed, or check with a dealer using the VIN.
•
Air suspension: listen for the compressor running constantly and check the car sits level.
•
Tyres and brakes: large wheels and a heavy car mean expensive replacements, so price them into your offer.
•
Off-road use: look underneath for damage to the sills, underbody and tow bar.

Theft risk and insurance
The Defender is a common target for thieves, and some insurers ask for extra security such as a tracker. Get an insurance quote on the exact registration before you buy, and ask the seller what security is fitted.
A stolen Defender may be given a cloned identity, so check the VIN on the car (windscreen and door pillar) matches the V5C. Read how to spot a cloned car.
Finance and history checks
Many Defenders are bought on PCP or HP, so outstanding finance is a real risk. Run a finance check before paying anything. Also check:
•
MOT history for mileage gaps and advisories (cars over three years old)
•
Write-off records, as repaired Defenders can be sold without the category being mentioned. See hidden write-off scams
•
The service history, ideally with a Land Rover dealer or specialist
Is a used Defender a good buy?
A well-looked-after Defender with full history and completed recalls can be a great buy, and it is likely to hold its value better than most SUVs. The key is checking the history and paperwork thoroughly, because the high value makes it a target.

FAQ
Which Defender engine is best? For most buyers, a D250 or D300 diesel balances power, economy and towing. A P400e plug-in hybrid suits short trips if you can charge at home.
Are Defenders reliable? Reliability has improved since launch, but early cars had software and electrical faults. A full service history and completed recalls matter more than the model year alone.
Why is Defender insurance expensive? High value, repair costs and theft risk all push premiums up. Get a quote on the exact car before you buy.
Do Land Rover Defenders hold their value? Generally yes, which is one reason they are popular. See cars that hold their value best.
