Hidden Write-Off Scams UK: How Cat S And Cat N Cars Get Sold As Clean

Some repaired write-offs are sold without the buyer being told. Here is how hidden write-offs happen, the signs to look for at a viewing, and the check that reveals the category.
A repaired write-off isn’t automatically a bad car. Many Cat S and Cat N cars are properly repaired and safe to drive. The problem is when a seller hides the category, so you pay a clean-car price for a car that is worth less, may cost more to insure and could have been repaired badly.
This is general advice, not a claim that any particular car or seller is dishonest.
Check this car free first: enter the registration at carverified.co.uk to confirm it matches the advert, then run a write-off check before you pay.
The write-off categories
•
Cat A: scrap only. The car must be crushed and no parts reused.
•
Cat B: break for parts. The body shell must be crushed, so the car should never return to the road.
•
Cat S: structural damage, such as to the chassis or crumple zones. It can be repaired and put back on the road.
•
Cat N: non-structural damage, such as cosmetic or electrical damage. It can be repaired and put back on the road.
Cars written off before October 2017 used the older Cat C and Cat D categories. Read the full guide to write-off categories.
How write-offs end up sold as clean
•
Not mentioned: the seller simply doesn’t say, and hopes you won’t check.
•
Not on the logbook: the V5C may not mention a write-off, so “the logbook is clean” doesn’t prove the car is.
•
Bought at salvage auction: a damaged car is bought cheaply, repaired, and listed with no mention of its past.
•
A different identity: in the worst cases, a Cat A or Cat B car that should have been destroyed is given the identity of another car. This is cloning, and the car may also be unsafe.

Why a hidden write-off costs you
•
Value: a repaired write-off is usually worth noticeably less than the same car without one, so you overpay.
•
Insurance: some insurers charge more, ask extra questions or won’t cover it, and not declaring it could cause problems with a claim.
•
Finance: some lenders won’t finance a written-off car. See can I finance a Cat N car.
•
Safety: a poorly repaired Cat S car may not protect you as well in a crash.
•
Selling on: you’ll need to tell future buyers, which lowers the price you get.
Warning signs at the viewing
•
Paint that doesn’t quite match between panels, or overspray on rubber seals and trim
•
Uneven gaps between doors, bonnet and boot
•
New parts, such as headlights or a bumper, on an otherwise older car
•
Airbag or other warning lights on the dashboard
•
Uneven tyre wear, which can point to bent suspension or steering
•
Signs of welding or fresh sealant in the boot floor, under the carpets or in the engine bay
•
A price well below similar cars, with no clear reason given
How to protect yourself
1.
Run a write-off check on the registration before you view.
2.
Ask the seller directly: “Has this car ever been written off or in an accident?” and note the answer.
3.
If it is a Cat S or Cat N car, ask for repair invoices and photos, and get an independent inspection.
4.
Get an insurance quote on the exact registration before you buy.
5.
Use the used car checklist at the viewing.
If you’ve already bought one
If the seller told you the car hadn’t been written off and it had, keep the advert, messages and receipts. If you bought from a dealer, contact them first, because dealers must not mislead you about a car’s history. Citizens Advice can explain your options, and if you think it was deliberate fraud, report it to Action Fraud.
Which CarVerified report covers this?
The write-off check is the one that catches this scam, and it’s included from Silver upwards. Gold adds salvage auction records, which can show photos and damage details from when the car was sold for repair.
•
Free check: start with the free vehicle check to confirm the make, model, colour, year and MOT and tax status match the advert.
•
Silver: the core vehicle history check, including write-off and stolen records.
•
Silver Plus: adds the outstanding finance check.
•
Gold: the most complete report, adding ex-taxi, salvage and valuation checks.
See what each report includes on the pricing page or the sample report.

Has the car been written off?

A write-off can look fine but be worth far less and harder to insure or sell. Check its category and history before you buy.
CarVerified Silver (£3.99) includes write-off and stolen checks.
