eBay And Gumtree Car Scams UK: Warning Signs And How To Stay Safe

Classified and auction sites are full of genuine sellers and a few scammers. Here are the patterns that appear on eBay and Gumtree car listings, and how to protect yourself.
Online auctions and classified sites make it easy to find a used car, and easy for scammers to reach buyers. Most sellers on eBay and Gumtree are genuine, but the same patterns repeat across platforms.
This is general guidance on common patterns, not a claim about any seller or about the platforms’ policies.
Check this car free first: enter the registration at carverified.co.uk to confirm it matches the advert, then see what a full report adds on the pricing page.
Common patterns
•
Pressure to leave the platform. The seller asks you to continue by email or a messaging app, or to pay outside the site, where the platform cannot help you.
•
Fake “payment protection”. A message or website claims to hold your money safely. It is run by the scammer.
•
Fake delivery or shipping. The car is “abroad” or with a courier, and you pay before you see it.
•
A “second chance” offer. After an auction, someone claims the winner dropped out and offers you the car privately.
•
Copied listings. Real photos and descriptions are taken from another advert.

Before you bid or buy
1.
Run the registration through a free check at carverified.co.uk and compare the details with the listing.
2.
Check the seller’s history and feedback over time, not just the last few days.
3.
Read the platform’s own buyer protection terms, as they are often limited for vehicles.
4.
Do not pay for a car you have not seen.
At the viewing
Meet at the V5C address, match the VIN to the V5C and the history report, and check the seller’s identity. Read our guide on Facebook Marketplace car scams for the same checks in more detail.
Which CarVerified report covers this?
Before you bid or pay, run the registration. Silver Plus adds the finance check, and Gold is the most complete report.
•
Free check: start with the free vehicle check to confirm the make, model, colour, year and MOT and tax status match the advert.
•
Silver: the core vehicle history check. Finance is not part of Silver, but it can be unlocked separately.
•
Silver Plus: adds the outstanding finance check.
•
Gold: the most complete report, adding ex-taxi, salvage and valuation checks.
See what each report includes on the pricing page or the sample report, and use the used car checklist when you view the car.

Buying a used car?

Check the vehicle history before you buy: MOT history, mileage, outstanding finance, write-offs and theft records.
CarVerified Silver Plus (£5.99) covers write-off, stolen and outstanding finance checks.
Start with the free check - upgrade only if you want the full report.
