Short answer: no, with two narrow exceptions. In Great Britain a car that needs an MOT cannot be driven or parked on the road once its MOT has run out. GOV.UK says you can be fined up to £1,000 for driving without a valid MOT.
When does a car need an MOT?
A car needs an MOT by the third anniversary of its registration, then every year after that, by the anniversary of its last MOT. Some vehicles, such as certain historic ones, can be exempt, so check the rules for your vehicle.
GOV.UK allows you to drive a vehicle without a valid MOT only:
1.
To or from somewhere to be repaired, for example after a failed test
2.
To a pre-arranged MOT test
In practice, keep proof of the booking, drive directly, and do not use the trip for anything else. The car also still needs to be roadworthy, taxed and insured.
What if your car fails its MOT?
You can take the vehicle away only if your current MOT is still valid and no “dangerous” problem was listed. Otherwise it needs repairing first.
•
Major defect: the car has failed. Get it repaired and retested.
•
Dangerous defect: the car must not be driven until it is repaired. The penalty can be a fine of up to £2,500, a driving ban and 3 penalty points.
A car with a valid MOT must still meet minimum standards of roadworthiness at all times. An MOT pass does not protect you if something is unsafe.

GOV.UK’s MOT page does not set out how an expired MOT affects your insurance, so check your policy. Many insurers expect a car to have a valid MOT and may question a claim if it did not. Do not assume you are covered.
